Are you looking for a new weight lifting routine to keep you motivated? We can all get bored by using the same lifts, day in and day out, so why not try a new workout every so often?

A great weight lifting routine is known as “Sand Bag Training”. This workout is absolutely incredible, and builds not only muscle, but real world strength and endurance.

So, what is sag bag training? Pretty much, it involves filling a canvas bag with sand incrementally, and using the bag to train. The best aspect of sand bag training is that you can train literally anywhere, you are not stuck training in the gym. I quite often enjoy going to my local park with my sandbag, and having a total, fully body workout in the sun.

Any weight lifting routine could benefit with a slight mix up every so often, and a sand bag training routine is a great way to do this.

Canvas bags can be bought from a multitude of places. I bought mine from an army surplus store. I think filled smaller bags with sand, with each smaller bag weighing 5 kilograms (11lbs).

The amount of weight you should actually place in your canvas bag depends on a the exercises you will be doing, and your current fitness level. Also, remember, unlike a dumbbell, sand bags are fluid, and move as you exercise. This means that you will have to use a much lower weight then you do with barbell or dumbbell exercises.

You can do clean and presses, squats, bench press and rows with your sand bag. These will target every muscle group in your body, and really give you an amazing all over body workout. Also, because the bag is much harder to hold than a dumbbell or barbell, you utilise even more muscle groups than you normally would.

My personal favourite exercise with the sand bag is the stair walk. You simply put the sand bag on your shoulder and carry it up and flight of stairs. You then walk back down (very carefully). This may seem easy, but I assure you, even muscle in your body will be screaming after a few reps.

It really is incredibly powerful, so if you weight lifting routine could use a change, try it out!

Traditionally, for the most part baseball players are not as ripped or bulked muscle definition wise as football players. The vision of rippling muscles flexing under the tremendous strains of lifting weights does not seem to compute for a MLB player in the gym as it does for a football player in the weight room. Although it’s true football players normally require additional and different muscle bulk for the tasks they must perform vs. the baseball player, that doesn’t mean a baseball player isn’t suppose to be muscular or work out with weights. Alas, just the opposite is true.

The core strength of a baseball player, shoulders, hips and legs must be very strong in order to produce the explosive energy which propels baseballs 410′ or throws a 100 mph fastball.

Core strength is produced by muscle bulk and muscles are built by lifting weights of varying sets, reps and amounts. The heavier the weight, the bigger the muscle mass which is created, while the more sets and reps performed, the more toned and lean the muscle.

Let’s exam just one aspect of building muscles through lifting weights which increase core strength and how it enhances our baseball abilities. The legs are the foundation of the core, giving the body balance and an ability to coil and explode much as a snake when striking.

The legs must be strong enough to carry and balance the entire weight of the body as it prepares to begin the starting mechanism of the swing, or being able to hold the hands back as the body begins its motion forward.

Most non-baseball people mistakenly believe the power for hitting originates in the shoulders and chest area, which is not correct, not totally that is. The explosion of power originates from the turning of the hips, which when turned with speed and power, leads the rest of the body into a powerful pin wheel reaction increasing the velocity and speed of the baseball bat as it travels through the hitting zone.

This speed of the bat, as we know, is what actually transfers the body’s strength and power into the baseball as contact is made. Simply defined, slow bat speed equates into weak hitting, while quick bat speed equates into powerful hitting and the sum of it all…weak core strength equals slow bat speed. Increasing core strength through exercising with weights is the best method to achieve results in the shortest period of time.

That’s not to say other forms of training, cardio, stretching, pilates or yoga are not essential for perfecting our body strength, flexibility and limberness in order to prevent injury, but for pure muscle building.. Lifting weights in the proper manner is the Best method to build strength through muscle bulk.

Improve lower body functional strength and stability with this exercise. This functional training exercise is geared towards mixed martial artists and wrestlers, but anyone can add it to their workout routine.

By Chris Collora

A dynamic MMA training or wrestling conditioning program should include deep squats using both bodyweight and added resistance, as well as unstable surfaces. The reason being is deep squats simulate changing levels.

Changing levels basically involves squatting down in a forward motion so you’re in good position to attack an opponent’s leg(s) for a takedown. Level changing forms the basis of the folkstyle type of wrestling you see in high school and college wrestling. Takedowns are at times attempted when the feet are moving or off balance. Level changing on unstable surfaces such as air pillows can simulate the instability involved with shooting in for a takedown.

Traditionally used as a wrestling conditioning drill, wrestler squats differ from regular bodyweight squats due to the involvement of leaning forward, which you should not do for regular squats. Leaning forward adds the functional training component to the squat, however you place a lot of stress on your lower back and knees if you are not conditioned or have injury. With that being said, wrestling squats should not be attempted if you have back or knee issues.

Before going into more detail, I’d like to add a comment about exercise tempo for wrestler squats. Start off slow and focus on the form described below and maintaining balance throughout the whole range of motion. Eventually, you want to be able to change levels as fast as you would in a real situation. If you’ve never squatted before or haven’t recently, try these without the pillows.

Level changing on air pillows (feet square) – Step onto air pillows (you can actually use normal pillows or sofa cushions as well) and establish an upright stance, knees slightly bent with hands together in front of chest, palms facing forward. Keeping back straight and head up, squat down leaning forward so that back of elbows touch the knees at the bottom of the movement. Return to starting position. Get into a good practice of keeping your head up to help with your squatting form and most importantly so it becomes second nature in your wrestling or MMA training. Any decent wrestler will snap your head down the second you look down at the mat.

Level changing on air pillows (feet staggered) – Establish same stance as above except with feet staggered front to back about a shoulders width apart. Squat down leaning forward so that knee comes between both elbows and makes contact with the same side shoulder. After finishing the last rep, immediately switch legs so that the rear leg is now forward and repeat.

If you’re a beginner start off by doing 10 reps in each position for a total of 30 reps. The key is to not take a break in between changing positions. By the time you can do 50 reps in each position your lower body anaerobic endurance will be quite impressive. Doing wrestler squats as a warm-up before every wrestling or MMA training session and after when you’re body is exhausted will set you apart from the rest.

• Warm-up before the actual MMA training is essential. It helps in conditioning the body and keeps it injury free. Similarly, tone down exercises on rest days are quite helpful to keep one fit for workouts.

• Training with a partner can enhance the output of your MMA workouts. It help practice offensive and defensive moves in a more simulated condition.

• To get most of your workouts ensure that your training schedule is dynamic and follows a progressive pattern. Increase intensity and volume of training gradually. It helps in ensuring better adaption, adding more strength, and greater endurance.

• Ideal MMA workout includes combination of bodyweight and weight training. However, focus should be more on bodyweight exercises.

Making Training More Effective

MMA workouts require adequate protein intake. Diet should be balanced with fruit, vegetables, pulses, and other nutritional elements.
MMA conditioning workouts are your key to a better performance in the real bout. Despite being the master of exceptional skills, you can be a loser in the real competition if you neglect mixed martial arts-specific conditioning. These workouts help build focus on the game, increase stamina and endurance levels.

Need for Exceptional MMA Conditioning

Do not think that running like a marathon runner or sprinter will help you boost your game and enhance your skills. All these cardio exercises can do is to raise your physical fitness but do no good to improve your game or performance. To do so, you must condition your body in a way that it is capable of bearing the stress and pain that it would undergo during the actual competition. It is here that MMA conditioning training come to your rescue. If you are practicing to be an MMA fighter, learn the conditioning workouts first and be prepared to emulate the same level of work output as in a real competition.

You can choose any of the following conditioning workouts:

• shadow boxing

• skipping

• squat jumping

• sandbag drills

• double-ended bag drills

• sledge hammer drills

• plyometric drills

• heavy bag slams

• sit-ups

• sprawling

• push-ups

These are just a few of the MMA-specific conditioning programs. You can try any or all of these for a better stamina, strength, and endurance. Moreover, these workouts are fun and do not require much investment.

Advantages of Excepional MMA Conditioning

To derive the maximum benefit from your conditioning workouts, spare some more time for them. For example, if you are competing in a five-minute round, you must condition your body for a seven-minute round. Besides, decrease the rest period that you would otherwise get during the actual competition. For example, if one-minute rest period is given in a real competition, cut down your rest time to 60-70 seconds during conditioning workout.

• Conditioning helps you gain strength to exert power at the right moment in a game. You will learn endurance and patience to bear pain in an actual game. Patience will teach you to strike at the opportune moment.

• Conditioning helps you become agile enough to react at the opportune time and move your limbs with great force.

• Conditioning contributes to building stamina, besides strength and endurance, to stay focused for a prolonged time.

• Conditioning workouts teach you balancing skills, which are quite essential to endure during a real game. When you know how to balance the body on the ground or in the air, you are on the right track during the actual bout.

MMA conditioning reduces the likelihood of any chances of injury in the actual bout, for you will be trained enough to face any forward, backward, or any kind of movements. Though MMA conditioning workouts promise a better performance in the real competition, overstressing yourself will only invite injury before the game. Devote the four weeks running into the competition to conditioning workouts and notice the difference on the D-day.

Nutrition in body building is very important for anyone serious about the sport. Good nutrition is essential for a healthy life, but it is most important for a body builder to have effective workouts and grow muscles quickly and efficiently. What type of nutrition should you have to become successful in your body building quest?

You need to first have a diet that is high in protein. That means eating a lot of chicken, fish, and meat. Chicken and fish are best for you because of their low fat content. Although fats are important in body building nutrition, you still must be careful that your fat consumption doesn’t contribute to health problems.

Another big part of healthy body building nutrition intake is to be sure that you consume lots of carbohydrates. Carbs are very important because they provide the primary energy source for our body from the foods we eat. You will need lots of energy to complete an intense workout which will build your muscles quicker and more efficiently.
Complex carbohydrates are the best carbs to take in. These can be found in foods such as whole grain rice, whole grain breads, and pasta. Be sure to take your carbohydrates with protein for maximum efficiency.

Fats are also very important in body building nutrition. Believe it or not, fats actually do good in our bodies providing insulation for body parts like the heart and lungs as well as making energy when the fats break down. Of course, you will want to consume the good fats as opposed to the bad ones so that you don’t gain weight through fat intake.

Saturated fats are the worst fats to take in. These are fats like animal lard and butter. Saturated fats are those that stay solid at room temperature. Unsaturated fats are the “good fats”, but they also should be consumed in moderation. Olive oil and flaxseed oil are good unsaturated fats. They stay liquid when at room temperature.

A very important fat group that can help both your body and mind are Omega 3 fatty acids that are found in fish. Omega 3 fatty acids are known to combat depression, fend off fatigue, and give you energy you need to workout.

You should also include a lot of fresh vegetables in your diet. Foods such as broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots give you many vitamins and minerals that are necessary for a healthy body. Fruit should be consumed in moderation as they naturally contain a certain amount of sugar naturally. Too much sugar can hinder your progress.

In the sport of body building, nutrition is just as important as lifting weights and exercising. Getting good nutrition is essential for an effective body building routine. Eat what’s good for you and what your body needs without over-indulging too much. Then sit back and watch your body grow!

The name Arnold is well-known in the sport of body building. California’s governor made body building what it is today. This Austrian amazement came onto the body building scene in the 1970′s and changed the face of body building forever.

Today, because Arnold has been so important in the sport, he now holds his own body building competition called the Arnold classic. This organization holds contests for amateurs and experts alike for women, men, and teens. It has become one of the most popular competitions to be in because winning it symbolizes the approval of body building’s biggest star.

They also hold an annual exposition. It is the largest expo in the country with over 600 exhibitors showcasing healthy fitness products for body builders and fitness enthusiasts that attend. It is a three day expo that features entertainment as well as competitions to over 100,000 people who attend every year.

Besides holding body building competitions, the Arnold organization also has a martial arts division that caters to those people who have a love of karate and other types of martial arts. Dan Severns, one of the most respected men in the field of wrestling and ultimate fighting has recently signed on to conduct workshops for interested people.

An annual Arnold Sports Festival is also held by the company where there are strongman competitions; awards for various areas of body building, boxing, and wrestling; and much more! They showcase power lifters, top body builders, and martial artists at this festival. It is touted as the festival that makes fitness fun.

Being the benevolent sort, Arnold has also set up scholarships for college bound students. They are sponsored also by the Rotary Clubs of America and offer up over $10,000 worth of scholarships to students studying or participating in gymnastics, weight lifting, boxing, and such.

Probably one of the most exciting parts of the Arnold Expo and Festival is the focus on body building athletes who are older than the norm. With Arnold himself fast approaching senior citizen status, it’s refreshing to find a place that encourages and supports senior body builders and athletes. It’s never too late to get in shape and the Arnold corporation embraces that concept wholeheartedly.

Because the name Arnold is so well-known in body building circles, the doors that open up to people who share a love of body building, weight lifting, wrestling, and martial arts through that name are amazing. His drawing power is huge, and the respect he garners makes any event sponsored by Arnold a legitimate and compelling place to be.

Starting out in bodybuilding as a teen and you will experience a lifetime of benefits. Find out about the dos and dont's.

Teen body building is rising in popularity as many young people decide that they want to get fit and be healthy. Starting an exercise program when you’re young is a great way to stay fit for life. However, teens need to take into consideration a few things before they start a body building program.

Because a young person’s body isn’t fully developed, it’s important for a teen to be cautious when starting a body building workout. Here are some guidelines to follow for a teen who wants to get into body building:

* Teens under the age of 13 should never start an intense weight lifting regimen. It’s alright to start exercising, but stick to low-impact exercises like push ups and chin ups. Leave the weight lifting until later.
* Squats and dead lifts can be started after the age of 16. These exercises require a great amount of precision to be done correctly. If you do not do them the right way, you can cause serious injury to your body.
* There is no reason you should ever take any type of testosterone supplements in your body building program. Teen boys naturally have a large amount of testosterone already in their bodies. When a testosterone supplement is added to a teen body building program, you risk stunting your growth.
* Your diet should include a large amount of protein and carbohydrates. These two nutrients provide you with energy and muscle building power, so be sure to eat right.
* Rest is also very important in a teen body building program. Not only will sleep help you concentrate more and be an effective exerciser, rest will also help your body prepare itself for another workout and repair whatever damage was done during the day. Muscles grow at night when you’re asleep, so get a minimum of 8 hours of sleep per night if not more.
* If you are serious about body building as a teen, it’s important that you stick with your workout program and keep an eye on your ultimate goal. Unless you have a very good reason, you need to stick with your workout plan and not skip days in favor of other activities.

Body building is a great way for a teen to get fit, lose weight, and stay healthy. If you start being conscious of your body and your health when you are young, you are setting the stage for a healthy adult life as well. In general, teen body building is a great way to achieve the goal of a healthy body and a healthy life – just be sure you aren’t pushing yourself beyond your limits. Use the advice of adults, and start today!

If you are serious about body building, you will want to consider adding a body building supplement to your nutritional program. Supplements are sort of like vitamins. They add to what you are already doing when eating right for body building and provide you with more of what your body needs to grow muscle.

You have many choices when it comes to body building supplements. There are hundreds of brands on the market, and the choice is up to you which one you want to use. They are all essentially the same, but some companies are more trustworthy than others. Pick a company that is well known and well-respected who has proven results.

As for what types of supplements you should use, there are basically four different ones that can help you in your workout program. These include:

* Protein powders
* Creatine
* Glutamine
* Nitric Oxide

Each has its own distinct advantages depending on what you are trying to achieve in your body building program. Protein helps build strong muscle, creatine combats fatigue allowing for longer, more effective workouts, glutamine helps combat the stress you are putting your body under during a workout, and nitric oxide increases the flow of muscle building agents to skeletal muscle.

Another supplement many body builders use should be avoided. In order to grow quickly, some body builders will resort to the use of synthetic steroids and growth hormones. However, these body building supplements can have damaging side effects. Many of these substances are illegal, and if you are competing in body building competitions, you will be disqualified if they are found in your system.

Body building supplements are generally considered safe to use for most people. If you are considering using a supplement, you should check with a doctor first. If you have any underlying conditions, the doctor will be able to tell you if using a specific supplement can help or ultimately hurt you.

Supplements in a body building program are just part of the sports. You probably won’t find a serious body builder who doesn’t use them. But be sure to use those that are legal and safe to use. If they aren’t, you may find you are hurting yourself rather than helping.

Body building supplements can be great tools to help you grow muscles and enhance your workouts. It’s possible to get by without them, but they can really add to your workouts and help you achieve your body building goals. Choose your supplements wisely, and use them regularly. Then keep up with your body building routine and realize great results!
